It wasn’t a complete lie. She was trying out a different supermarket, in a different part of the town, but not because she had a yearning for as yet undiscovered grocery brands, but because she needed to speak to Lois, and Sara had just happened to mention where Lois shopped every Saturday morning.

Fran pulled into the car park, eyes scanning the rows for a bright-red Mini. It was still early, so there was every possibility that Lois hadn’t yet arrived, which was exactly what Fran was hoping. Satisfied that there was no sign of her, Fran pulled into a free space near the entrance and, switching off her ignition, settled back to wait.

It took forty minutes, and two false alarms, but eventually the correct red Mini drove past and Fran got out of her car, heading for the supermarket entrance. It wouldn’t do to arrive exactly at the same time as Lois.

They met in the chilled food aisle, Fran ‘accidentally’ reaching for some milk at exactly the same time as Lois. She turned, smiled, apologised and then, eyes wide, said, ‘Oh… hi…’ Followed by a frown. ‘I know you, don’t I?’ she added, peering into Lois’s startled face.

‘I work at the school, so maybe.’ Lois put the milk into her trolley, giving Fran a polite but uninterested smile.

‘No, it’s not that, it’s…’ Fran waggled her fingers and then took in a sharp breath. She flashed a look behind her. ‘I know what it is. You’re a friend of Becky’s, aren’t you? I catered for the party Sara gave, the murder-mystery party.’ She delivered the last words in a stage whisper. ‘God, it’s awful, isn’t it? Poor Nick is so worried, and I can’t say I blame him.’

Lois frowned. ‘Yes, I remember, but I’m not sure… I didn’t know you knew Becky too.’

‘Oh, I didn’t, not really. I’m a friend of Nick’s, actually. But…’ She leaned in a little closer. ‘You wouldn’t have ten minutes, would you, when you’ve finished your shopping?’

A wary expression crossed Lois’s face. ‘I’m not sure, I—’

‘Only you might be able to help me with something. Well, help Nick. He’s going out of his mind with worry, and when I think about what happened to Becky…’ She put a hand to her cheek. ‘Please, I really am worried about him. He’s said some things about Becky which… I can’t say here. I could meet you in the coffee shop?’ Fran checked her watch. ‘At eleven? Will you have finished your shopping by then?’ She smiled brightly. ‘Oh, you’re a star, thank you so much,’ she finished, giving Lois no chance to reply.

She turned away, heading purposefully for the yoghurt without so much as a backward glance. She had no idea what Lois would do, but she was desperately hoping that curiosity would get the better of her. After all, if she did have a hand in Becky’s death then it could be in her interests to find out what Nick might have had to say about his wife.
